A man has been charged with up to 38 counts of deceiving a city centre bookmakers by falsifying bets on horses over the course of three months and is to face trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.
Tom Mulvihill (32 ) with an address at 24 Silver Springs, Cork, and formerly of Riverdale, Oranmore, appeared before Galway District Court on Monday charged with 19 counts of dishonestly by deception, with the intention of making gain or causing loss to another, by destroying, defacing, or falsifying a document made or required for accounting purposes, did while providing information for the purpose of recording bets placed on horse races produced or made use of the EPOS money transfer system by making an entry on a lodgement sheet that was false, misleading or deceptive at William Hill, Ballybane, on various dates between January 17 and April 18, 2010, contrary to Section 10(1 )(a ) and (3 ) of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud ) Act 2001.
Mulvihill was also charged with further 19 charges of dishonestly by deception with the intention of making gain or causing loss to another did decieve William Hill, Ballybane, by placing bets on horses without having paid cash for the bets on various dates between January 6 and April 18, 2010.
Detective Garda Dara Browne gave evidence of arresting Mulvihill before the court sitting and charging him in relation to all 28 of the offences to which the accused gave no reply. Inspector Brendan Carroll told the court that the director of public prosecutions has consented to the matter being dealt with on indictment. The court then heard that the State had no objection to bail being granted.
Judge Mary Fahy later granted Mulvihill legal aid and remanded him on his own bail of €1,000 to appear again at Galway District Court on May 23 next for the service of the book of evidence. Conditions of bail included a requirement for Mulvihill to surrender his passport and not to apply for any other travel documents, to sign on at Mayfield Garda Station, Co Cork, each Sunday between 9am and 9pm, reside at the address furnished to gardai, and to notify gardai in relation to any change of address within 24 hours.
