The picturesque west coast town of Clifden has this week been officially twinned with the beautiful seaside town of Plourazel in the province of Brittany in northwest France.
The official twinning ceremony was conducted by Lord Mayor of Plouarzel, Andre Talarmin, and Brian Hughes, president of the Connemara Chamber of Commerce, on Monday with the aim to encourage exchanges in the fields of cultural, tourism, education, sports, social, and economic affairs in the interests of our citizens.
To honour this momentous occasion the Garda band came from Dublin to lead a magnificent musical parade around the town before the official signing, followed by a performance in the town square which delighted the hundreds who turned out to enjoy the sunshine and celebrate the event.
A 12-person entourage from France were also treated to a wonderful tour of Connemara earlier in the day where they had the opportunity to visit many of the great iconic local sights and attractions such as the Sky Road, Kylemore Abbey, and the Inagh Valley.
The twinning comes in a year which sees Clifden celebrating its 200th birthday and this wonderful event is just the start of a number of activities and celebrations, organised by the local chamber of commerce, that are to take place throughout the year.
