Big cheer for local runners

Matt Bidwell of GCH and Jane-Ann Healy of Athenry AC were the first local runners home in the Craughwell AC 10-mile road race.

The event, which also incorporates the Galway AAI 10-Mile Championship, and attracted almost 600 runners on Sunday, was won by Barry Minnock of Rathfarnham WSAF AC. First lady home was again Pauline Curley, who shaved four seconds off her own course record with a finish of 58:55, completing a hat-trick of victories for her.

Bidwell finished in third place and also picked up a Galway AAI title in the men’s event which saw Minnock and Clare’s Michael Shannon swapping places throughout the 10 mile circuit until the Dubliner won by two seconds.

However it was Athenry’s Jane-Ann Healy who attracted one of the biggest cheers of the day when finishing second in the women’s event. In fourth place with a little over a mile to go, Healy pushed hard over the finishing stretch to pass two competitors.
