Moycullen look to youth next season

In their final game of what has been an encouraging Superleague season, Moycullen were unable to end on a high note, falling to Neptune in Cork by 82-56.

The game served as a summary of Moycullen's year - they batted tirelessly on defence but failed to reward that effort with a free flowing attack that could put the necessary points on the board.

That lack of scoring has been a curse throughout the 2011/2012 campaign. While the Galway team has regularly held others to low-scoring performances, they have not been able to capitalise.

"All in all it has been a great year,” said head coach Gerald Lyons. “ We played a lot of teams much closer than they expected and claimed our share of scalps along the way.

"In this one Neptune were just on fire, while we couldn't buy a basket. Finding scorers is something we need to do because the building blocks are there for a great team."

Although Moycullen’s sound-half court defence caused Neptune problems, Moycullen could not overcome a 25 -11 point lead after 10 minutes. They won the second quarter 17- 19 and eventually reduced the deficit to 10 in the third, but the Cork outfit ran out flattering winners.

One of the great positives from the weekend was the superb play of 16-years-old Patrick Lyons, who commanded the point guard spot when called into action. As one of last year's All-Ireland winning u-16 Moycullen team last season, Lyons, along with others from that talented group, could establish significant roles next season.

Moycullen: Luke Enos (19 ), Paul O'Brien (14 ), Cian Nihill (7 ), Michael Dowd (5 ), Dylan Cunningham (4 ), Nollaig Cunningham (4 ), Patrick Lyons (2 ), Eoghan Maxwell (2 ), Kevin Folan, Ian Burke.
