ULA public meeting on abortion legislation

Twenty years on from the X case, the State has failed to give legislative effect to the Supreme Court ruling which granted women the right to an abortion in Ireland in limited circumstances.

As a result, the United Left Alliance has brought forward the Medical Treatment (Termination Of Pregnancy In Case Of Risk To Life Of Pregnant Woman ) Bill 2012 in order to provide a legislative basis for the legal termination of a pregnancy in very limited circumstances where such treatment is deemed necessary to prevent a woman’s death, including the threat of suicide.

ULA Galway will hold an International Women’s Day public meeting on this issue in the Kirwan Theatre, NUI Galway, on Wednesday March 7 at 7.45pm. Speaking at the meeting will be Mary Smith and Therese Caherty.

Mary Smith, a midwife by profession and a nurse with the Dublin Well Woman centre, was a research officer for the Crisis Pregnancy Agency, now retired, and is a ULA/ SWP long time activist on women’s issues. Therese Caherty is of the ULA/People Before Profit Alliance.

The speakers will look at the actions for abortion access in Ireland up to the present day, and the legal and democratic issues arising.

All are welcome.
