A man was found driving a car, which basically had no brakes, into the back of another car at a roundabout while on his way to a garage, the Galway District Court heard this week.
The court heard that the car driven by 30-year-old Iosif Pasare had been leaking a considerable amount of breaking fluid effectively rendering the brakes useless. Pasare of 5 Cnoc Na Cille, Ballybane, was summoned to appear before Judge Mary Fahy on Monday where he pleaded guilty to careless driving, driving a defective vehicle, and with non-conforming registration plate at Rocklands, Oranmore June 8, 2011.
Inspector Mick Coppinger told the court that at 12.15pm the defendant had been driving at the busy a roundabout when he rear-ended another car. The inspector explained that although it was a minor incident the car, driven by the defendant, had “basically no brakes” as it was leaking break fluid. He added that Pasare was very lucky that a more serious accident had not happened.
Defence solicitor Thomas McHale said that his client, who has no previous convictions, accepts he was having difficulty with the car on the day and that he had been in fact on his way to a garage in Gort to have the vehicle assessed. Mr McHale added that Pasare just took his eyes off the road, that he had all his documents in order, that he had been very co-operative, and that the defendant no longer has the car.
Judge Fahy convicted Pasare of careless driving and fined him €250 and fined him a further €300 for having a defective vehicle. He was given five months to pay the fines.
