Funding has been allocated to carry out improvement works on two “extremely dangerous” junctions on the N59 Galway to Clifden road.
The 2012 draft roads budget for the Galway County Council has allocated the funds to carry out realignment works on the Bealnalappa junction (close to Oughterard ) and the Drimnahoon junction (close to Moycullen ). The amounts allocated for the Bealnalappa and Drimnahoon junctions are €20,000 and €7,500 respectively.
The Bealnalappa works will require the realignment of the existing junction while the Drimnahoon junction will necessitate the removal a section of land which will greatly improve the sight distances for all existing road users.
Independent councillor Thomas Welby has welcomed the allocations.
“Both of these junctions are extremely dangerous for people entering and exiting the N59,” he said. “The Drimnahoon junction was the scene of a fatal accident a number of years ago. Both of these schemes are extremely desirable and they will greatly add to road safety for all road users
