Galway’s city councillors want the HSE West to use empty beds in St Francis’ Nursing Home as step down beds for University Hospital Galway, and to employ the extra staff.
At Monday’s city council meeting, Independent councillor Catherine Connolly put forward a motion calling on the HSE West to take this approach. The motion received unanimous support from the other councillors.
“The unanimous support is a very significant step and it is really is now down to the Government TDs to break their silence and publicly endorse the positive solution proposed by the HSE West themselves,” said Cllr Connolly.
She said taking this approach was a “win-win solution” for all parties as it would allow the remaining residents in St Francis’ “to live in their home with dignity”.
Cllr Connolly said she will also be tabling a motion for the Regional Health Forum meeting on Tuesday February 28.
