Opposition is growing to plans by City Hall to provide two new Traveller halting sites in the city with councillors coming under public pressure to reject the proposals.
The Galway City Council’s Traveller Accommodation Plan 2009 - 2013, which is currently before the 15 councillors, proposes a number of measures to providing housing and accommodation for the city’s Travelling community.
The plan proposes two halting sites for Galway city with one to be located east of the Corrib and the other west. Six locations are proposed and councillors must decide which two are to be given the go ahead.
The proposed locations for the western halting site include Rahoon and two sites in Knocknacarra. The proposed locations for the eastern halting site include Oranmore, Coolough Road, and Ballindooley Cross.
However many councillors are being heavily lobbied and have already been inundated with phonecalls from residents in the proposed areas who are opposed to the plans and want the councillors to block them.
It is understood though that City Hall is determined the plans go ahead and will expect councillors to make a decision.
