This month will see the opening of Galway’s first shooting range — with target competitions to be held for adults and children in the run-up to Christmas.
Corrib Tackle is behind the venture that will see the opening of the range above the shop on the Tuam Road and customers can hire a selection of airsoft pistols and assault rifles for use on the five professional shooting lanes, one of which is also available for archery.
Airsoft guns fire a 6mm plastic pellet, and in Ireland are legally limited to one joule of energy – sufficient only to leave a minor bruise from a range of 10m.
Due to their realistic appearance they have become a phenomenally popular recreation activity and many Irish people now spend their weekends skirmishing outdoors.
However, Corrib’s shooting range is the first opportunity for skilled target practice, and its indoor location makes it appealing for less weather-hardened airsoft fans.
Corrib owner Derek Walsh says, “After we began selling airsoft guns earlier this year we realised how popular they are, and we quickly recognised that there was a demand for a controlled environment where people can hone their target skills.”
Corrib is hosting its first shooting tournament before Christmas. Anyone can register by calling Corrib or emailing [email protected].
The final will be held on Monday December 22, and the winner will receive a €250 cash prize, with numerous other runners up prizes. A separate tournament will also be hosted for children.
