NUIG celebrates football centenary

A special centenary event for NUIG’s Gaelic Football Club takes place next month in Galway.

Celebrating not only the club’s foundation 100 years ago, but also the year it won the Sigerson Cup for the first time, NUIG will combine its centenary event with a Sigerson reunion.

The special celebrations have been organised to coincide with Galway hosting the annual college football tournament on February 24 and 25.

The event is for all former UCG players, trainers, coaches, officers and members of the club throughout the decades. The event will take place at the Radisson Hotel, Galway, on Friday, February 24.

The 1962-63 Sigerson team members will be guests of honour in recognition of the 50th anniversary of their wins in both 1962 and 1963. All other winning Galway Sigerson teams of the last 60 years are also invited to join as special guests for the celebration.

The organisers say while this year’s reunion is a celebration of many successful Sigerson teams, the event will be a centenary celebration of all past Sigerson competitions, won or lost, and of the club’s achievements since its foundation.

The club expects former members will travel from all over the country to renew acquaintances, recall former matches, and enjoy the atmosphere. A special Centenary Sigerson programme is also being prepared for the weekend event.
