Galwegians RFC celebrates ninetieth anniversary

Galwegians RFC is celebrating its 90th anniversary with a gala banquet on St Patrick’s Day.

The ‘Great Galwegians Gathering’ coincides with one of the busiest days on the club’s calendar - the annual Glynn Cup which is played between Galwegians and Corinthians in a non-stop festival of rugby.

The anniversary celebration will take place in the evening following the Glynn Cup festival at the Galway Radisson Blu Hotel and guest of honour is John Killeen, CEO of club sponsors Cold Chon and chairman of Let’s Do It Global.

Galwegians’ president Noel Leader is calling all players past and present, and friends of the club, to attend the landmark event. “Galwegians has much to celebrate, and this provides a unique opportunity for friends to re-unite and reminisce about some great times past in the history of our great club, ” he said.

The Galway city club had made a huge contribution to Irish rugby.

“In our 90 years we have been proud to produce several top international players, from former greats like Tony O’Sullivan to Eric Elwood from the more recent generation. But it’s not just about internationals. We have given generations of Galwegians enjoyment through their involvement in rugby football, and made a hugely positive contribution to the local community in the process.”

Leader also hailed the significant contribution the club had made to the game off the field.

“We have provided six IRFU presidents since Henry Anderson in 1945, more than any other senior club, and next year we will be proud when Billy Glynn becomes our seventh president of the union.”

The Great Galwegians Gathering will commence at 7pm and will include a dinner with live band and entertainment. Tables of 10 are €750, with single tickets also available at €80.
