Mulholland to pick NFL panel over the next week

Galway football manager Alan Mulholland and his selectors face some difficult decisions over the next 10 days to trim the Galway football squad ahead of their Allianz League campaign.

The current squad of players from the FBD league will have to be cut back ahead of Galway's opening Allianz League game against Derry at Celtic Park on Sunday week.

"What we will be trying to do over the next week or so is to get down to the 30 or 35 players who we are going to carry for the Allianz League,” says Mulholland.

"Finalising that panel will be very difficult. The problem you have is with the lads who are not u-21 anymore. There is no safety net for them.”

Mulholland is also conscious of how difficult Galway’s programme of games will be in division 2 of the NFL.

"Our priority is to consolidate our position in the league. We want to stabilise the situation [in Galway football], and get to a state where we have a bit of momentum to take into the championship.

"Any thoughts of making play-offs would only be a bonus. Holding our position in division two is our primary goal."
