Loughrea anti-household charge public meeting

A public meeting will be held in Loughrea to launch a local campaign against the Government’s proposed household charge.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday January 24 at 8pm in Kinsella’s Bar, Main Street, Loughrea, and is aimed at residents of Loughrea, Gort, Ardrahan, Athenry, Monivea, Ballinasloe, Portumna, and the surrounding districts.

Daniel Doorhy, one of the meeting’s organisers, described the charge as “an injustice” and said a “clear message” must be sent to the Government that “we did not make this mess, we are struggling to keep our heads above water, and we will not pay for the mistakes of the rich”.

The meeting will discuss ways the household charge can be defeated and how families and individuals can come together to plan a boycott campaign.

“We need to oppose this charge and refuse to pay it,” said Mr Doorhy. “Even if the charge stayed at €100 it would be grossly unfair, however we’ve heard from the Government’s own number crunchers that it will rise to just under €1,000, and the dogs on the street know that a successful introduction of this charge will pave the way for water charges. It is vital that communities get together and refuse to pay this unequal and unjust charge.”

The meeting is open to all. For more information on the campaign see www.nohouseholdtax.org or call 1890 98 98 00.
