Mayor of Galway Hildegarde Naughton has called on Galway residents to make their views known on the future of traffic management in the city before the deadline for a public consultation which has been taking place for the past seven weeks. This is the last week of the city-wide transport survey, entitled ‘Galway Transport – Engage for a liveable city’, which seeks to promote public discourse on how to improve the city’s overburdened traffic systems. The survey will end on Saturday.
The survey, launched by Mayor Naughton in November, has been gathering the views and ideas of Galway residents through a dedicated website and targeted surveys carried out by students at shopping centres, schools, and public areas around the city. Businesses, multinationals, hospitals, and other key stakeholders have also been surveyed.
“We have been getting a great response from the citizens to the initiative including those who commute to work in Galway, schools, hospitals, and business interests,” Mayor Naughton said this week. “The advisory group are also engaging with key stakeholders in the city including An Garda Síochána and other relevant statutory bodies, together with private and public sector providers of transport services in the city.”
The initiative has been organised by a multidisciplinary group which includes members of Engineers Ireland West Region, individuals with specific transportation expertise, and NUI Galway, firstly on the engineering side to address the traffic issues, and secondly from the Digital Enterprise Research Institute, bringing best practice in web technologies and smart systems.
People can contribute to the consultation by emailing suggestions to [email protected], or by visiting www.galwaytf.com and participating in the online survey and/or commenting on the blog.
Once the survey is completed the advisory group will examine all submissions and outline the key recommendations in a report to be presented to the city’s Integrated Transportation Co-ordinating Group.
