Gort students perform at Amnesty International Human Rights Day

Students from Gort Community School recently performed at the Amnesty International Human Rights Day celebration to remember the creation, 63 years ago, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Colm O’Gorman, head of Amnesty Ireland, was so impressed with the students on a recent visit to the school that he asked them to perform at the concert alongside Sinead O’Connor, Brian Kennedy, and others.

To celebrate Amnesty's 50 years of working for human rights, a class group of third year Junior Certificate students in Gort Community School, Co Galway, were enthused into action. Working alongside their CSPE and music teacher, Yvonne Conroy, they explored the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in more detail, with both pens and musical instruments in hand. The CSPE class wanted to make the first year students in the school more aware of their human rights and responsibilities and they decided to use the melody of a well known song. By changing the lyrics, they carefully included references to both civil and political rights as well as economic, social, and cultural rights.

Time and time again throughout the history of Amnesty International we have learned that human rights are universal and inalienable; indivisible; interdependent and interrelated - one set of rights cannot exist without the other.
