A protest against the forthcoming septic tank charge will take place outside County Buildings on Prospect Hill this Monday.
County councillors are due to debate the issue at Monday’s council meeting. As a result the organisers of the protest are calling on people to assemble from 1pm at County Buildings “in order to make the county councillors aware of the strength of opposition to this septic tank charge and other newly proposed taxes”.
According to a spokesperson from the Connemara meetings there is growing anger in rural Ireland at this new tax. This anger has been visible at all the meetings being held throughout County Galway over the past months.
“This septic tank bill is being rushed through the Dáil and is a blatant attack on rural Ireland,” said the spokesperson. “The septic tanks issue is a question of fairness. City people do not pay an extra charge for the installation and maintenance of sewerage schemes: it comes out of general taxation.
“The money is there. The State will invest €1.5 billion in water and wastewater services over the next five years. We demand a percentage of that money.”
