Greenfields overcome city rivals in senior league

Greenfields continued their winning ways with a superb 3 - 1 performance against their great rivals Galway Hockey Club on Sunday at Dangan in the Connacht Senior League.

Galway continue to top the table, having lost just one game, but this win for Greenfields ensures the league is still up for grabs.

The first half was played in atrocious weather with heavy rain, but it did not deter both team from playing a fast open game.

On the day Greenfields were that bit sharper and played an amount of one-touch hockey that kept the ball moving up the pitch at a fast pace. Trish Garrett, on the right of midfield, and Gillian Heavey, on the left, both did trojan work in carrying the ball down both wings and keeping a good supply to the forwards.

On the Galway side, Elaine Carey was a constant threat both at robbing defenders and tearing into the box with some superb runs.

Greenfields opened the scoring on 10 minutes. Catherine Moore found Trish Garrett on the right side of midfield and, after passing two defenders, her accurate cross-field pass found the incoming Alma Whelan who fired past Natasha Cooke in the Galway goal.

Galway were on level terms five minutes later. Ali Hynes passed to Dee Hatton in the left corner before crossing to Louise Conden who tapped in.

Galway nearly took the lead two minutes later when a great shot by Elaine Carey off a short corner was deflected just wide.

Greenfields should have gone ahead just before the break from a short corner but Gillian Heavey’s powerful shot came back off the left hand post.

Both sides could have taken the lead at the start of the second half with chances from short corners, but thereafter it was all Greenfields. They took the lead after 15 minutes after fine work from Trish Garrett and Mary Healy was finished off by Gillian Heavey in the box.

Five minutes later Greenfields wrapped up the game with another good move. Aine Collins fed Trish Garrett with a great pass before Mary Healy tapped in.
