Art exhibitions over December

OVER THE Christmas period, take some time to explore a fascinating series of exhibitions which have opened, or are about to open, throughout the city.

The Tales are True, an exhibition by Marie Connole, is currently on show in the Eight BAR and Restaurant.

The inspiration for these works come from the familiar symbols, pictures, and motifs from folktales, old encyclopaedias, children’s science books, and films. Lead characters are drawn to open locked doors, to eat the forbidden apple. From this they often undertake adventures that lead to a maturing of their personality and gain knowledge which would not be otherwise found.

The show is presented by Galway Arts Centre in collaboration with the restaurant until January 8.

On The Beach, an exhibition of new work by Austin DH Ivers, is currently on show at the 126 gallery in Queen Street. In this show, Ivers explores his fascination with imagined pasts and possible futures. Set in the early 1980s, a series of interrogations are conducted, via CCTV, challenging the viewer to understand what it is all about.

The show runs until January 7. The gallery will be closed between December 23 and January 3.

Staff at University Hospital Galway will host an exhibition on their artworks, entitled Art@work, in the Arts Corridor of UHG. The exhibition will feature more than 30 pieces in a variety of media; oils, watercolour, acrylic, photography, and drawing.

Art@work will be officially launched by John Behan tomorrow and remain on display until January 30. Members of the public are welcome to the launch and to the exhibition.

Memorabilia, an exhibition of paintings by Bryan Chisolm (aka BamBam ), opens on Wednesday December 21 at 6pm in Galway Bay Galleries, Burkes Lane, and Lower Fairhill Road (beside Kashmir and opposite the fire station ).

The show will feature some of the artist’s best work over the last few years. Work will also be on sale at reasonable prices. The exhibition runs until Friday December 23. See Galway Bay Galleries on Facebook.
