Pop up shops in Galway this weekend

Two ‘pop-up’ shops will open in Galway, one in Ard Bia, one beside TK Maxx in Eyre Square, selling vintage clothes, arts, and crafts.

Pop-up shops retail is a trend of opening short-term sales spaces. Pop-up retail allows a company to create a unique environment that engages their customers, as well as generating a feeling of relevance and interactivity. They are often used by marketers for seasonal items.

Props & Vintage, a new company based in Galway which specialises in costume and prop hire for film and theatre, will hold a pop-up shop in Ard Bia today.

The special pop-up shop will see Props & Vintage sell a large selection of vintage clothes from Zandra Rhodes, Ossie Clark, Mary Quant, and Norman Norell, as well as luggage, compacts, gloves, hats, jewellery, and bags, upstairs in Ard Bia. These will be on sale along with a selection of contemporary and recycled furniture.

The night will also see the launch of a photography exhibition by Ruby Wallis at 7pm. These fashion shots in vintage frames will be on sale and available to view over the Christmas period.

After the official opening, from 7.30pm, there will be glasses of mulled cider and a DJ set of rock’n’roll and 1950s music from Kit Kola.

Props & Vintage is based in 24 Kilkerrin Park, Liosban Industrial Estate, Galway. See www.propsandvintage.ie

Pop-uP TANK 2011 opens in the former Zebra store beside TK Maxx, Eyre Square. It will have a preview night tomorrow from 6pm to 9pm, and will be open seven days a week from now until Christmas Eve.

The store will stock Irish goods only. “We really are trying to push and promote a shop local, shop Irish, vibe and take the opportunity to showcase some of the best that Ireland has to offer in terms of craft and art,” said Rona O’Reilly, one of the people behind Pop-uP TANK 2011.

For the opening night tomorrow, a number of craftspeople will be on hand to talk about their work and there will be drinks and nibbles. There will also be 15 per cent off all purchases that evening. For more information see Facebook.
