OPERA, REGGAE, sean nós, Barbershop, jazz, folk, trad, and hip hop will be performed and celebrated at the 2011 Spirit of Voice festival from Friday November 11 to Sunday 13.
The festival begins on Friday 11 at 9pm with a show in The Rowing Club in Woodquay, featuring The Bugle Babes, a female melody trio led by singer Derby Browne, who perform the songs of The Andrews Sisters as well as other 1940s favourites.
Also on the bill is baritone Darragh McGann, Barbershop quartet Chill, German singer-songwriter Nina Viertel, and Connemara sean nos singer Orlaith Ni Mheachair. Admission is €5 and €10 after 10pm.
On Saturday 12 from 9pm in The Rowing Club, there will be music from Irish-Malaysian band Madu. Led by brother and sister Salim and Aminah, Madu mix Malaysian roots reggae, dance hall, and dub. Check out their album From The Elders Yard.
Beatboxer Whitenoise will keep the groove moving by making mouth music to dance to. There will also be the angelic voice of singing prodigy Casey Leigh, and Swedish blues-rock singer Erika Feeney. Admission is €10 or €5 before 10pm.
The festival moves to The Crane Bar, Sea Road, on Sunday with a line up that includes Tuam poet and singer-songwriter Seamus Ruttledge, who will perform songs from his new album Songs To Have With Your Tea; National ESB Feis Ceoil 2011 winner Kayla McDonagh from Connemara; Germanys Nina Viertel; and guests. Admission is €5.
The annual voice workshops will be held on Saturday 12, starting at 11am with Kundalini yoga voice chants with Nina Viertel, followed by classes with Helen Webb, Mallika McCarthy, and Ireland’s champion beatboxer Cian Sayles aka Whitenoise.
