Cllr Cuddy calls on Galway County Council to come clean on funding for road repairs

Independent councillor for the Oranmore Electoral Area Jim Cuddy has called on Galway County Council officials to issue a statement on why road repairs around the county are not being carried out and to secure emergency funding for this work.

“I am being inundated with calls about the condition of local roads, but there is simply no funding available to carry out repairs and resurfacing. People pay road tax with the expectation that funding will be used to repair roads in their county and is totally unfair that the most basic road repairs are not being completed.

“Not only do poor roads result in extra wear and tear on cars, but some roads are also very unsafe. In addition to the lack of funding for repairs, certain contracts have to be completed before the end of the year or the funding will have to be returned to the Exchequer and the council have not got the staff to complete these contracts and do other work.

“In the current climate there are plenty of people who would be willing to work on road repairs, even on short-term contracts, and Galway County Council needs to look at this. I am calling on Galway County Council to issue a statement on the current state of affairs and demand emergency funding from the Department as a matter of urgency. This situation cannot be allowed to continue any more,’ said Cllr Cuddy.
