Kilconly footballers go senior for the first time

Kilconly GAA club had their proudest day ever last Sunday when the club which was founded in 1943 went senior for the first time in the club’s history.

They produced a titanic performance to oust a fancied Oughterard in the county Intermediate final by 2-5 to 0-7 at Pearse Stadium

Kilconly’s current footballers have worked the oracle and players like team captain Kevin Brady, Barry Concannon, county u-21 star Adrian Murphy, Damien Concannon, John Paul Steede, James Fair and Padraic Moran can be extremely proud of their immense contributions last Sunday.

Adrian Murphy notched a crucial 1-2 from play and his class in front of goal was a key factor in their success this season.

It has been a fairytale season for the club and their team manager, Bernard Brady.

His selectors Ciaran Prendergast and Tommy Ronan and team trainer Frank Doherty will have been delighted with the way their side knuckled down to the task in hand and kept Kevin Clancy’s side scoreless in the first half.

It was a bitterly disappointing day for the Oughterard outfit. They never got going at all. They are better than they showed last weekend, but to the victors the spoils and Kilconly were the team that showed up on the day. That’s championship.

The Galway champions are now due to face the Roscommon champions Padraig Pearses in Hyde Park on Sunday week, while Oughterard have the consolation of playing in the semi-final of Celebrity Bainisteoir this Sunday.

Oughterard’s second chance for honours

After losing the county intermediate final in Sunday’s replay, Oughterard are back in action this weekend in Celebrity Bainisteoir.

Oughterard, championed by former Green TD Paul Gogarty, take on Lissane of Derry on Sunday in Corribdale Oughterard at 3pm.

Lissane, formerly managed by Presidential candidate Dana, will now be guided by Majella O Donnell, wife of famous country singer Daniel.
