Chinese deal a major boost for Galway’s Lightstorm

Dangan-based Lightstorm Networks, enabling next generation packet network services with carrier-grade Ethernet silicon, has announced that ZTE Corporation — a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, will now be using Lightstorm’s Brooklyn-10 carrier Ethernet switch for a VOD server application. The agreement reflects the surge in VOD usage worldwide, while emphasizing both companies’ commitment to providing the innovative technology required to exceed that demand.

Founded by seasoned systems, software, and semiconductor executives, Lightstorm Networks is a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor solutions enabling high-performance carrier-gr de Ethernet networks. It designs, develops, and supplies semiconductor solutions and provides hardware and software subsystems

In ZTE’s anticipated VOD server application project, aimed at millions of viewers, ZTE recognizes that it is critical to avoid video disruption. ZTE selected the Brooklyn-10 because it is created specifically for the carrier market. The carrier class nature of the Brooklyn-10 provides both the deep packet buffering and the sophisticated traffic management necessary to prevent pixelization and blocky video, both of which can cause a poor user experience.

As one of the first Chinese telecoms equipment providers to pursue business in overseas markets, ZTE is committed to enhancing customer satisfaction and company growth both within China and outside its borders. ZTE is working in conjunction with China Telecommunication on this application and will be running a pilot later this year in Shanghai.

The strategic supply agreement was signed in conjunction with a trade mission led recently by the Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

Dr Malachy Rice, sales director of Europe and Asia for Lightstorm Networks says, “China is rolling out state-of-the-art IPTV services to millions of subscribers. To be a key-enabling technology in the infrastructure of this deployment is an amazing achievement for a young Irish semiconductor company.

“This deal shows that with the right engineering talent, the right venture capital and government support, and the right market foresight, Irish high technology companies can compete for leading edge technology deals across the globe.”
