The dates for both the beginning and completion of works for the long awaited Knocknacarra Community Centre at Cappagh Park have this week been confirmed.
Works will start on February 27 2012 at the latest with a view to being completed by February 2013. The proposed new building will be a state of the art facility including passive ventilation and energy efficient systems including solar panels. It will also incorporate space for the performance and musical arts.
The dates were announced at a recent meeting between the Galway City Council’s director of services and Galway City West councillors.
“The news has been welcomed by Independent councillor Catherine Connolly. “Given the long and exasperating background to this project the confirmation that the project will start early next year is wonderful news,” she said.
Councillors were informed that 11 expressions of interest had been received from contractors and these are now being processed. Those shortlisted will then be invited to tender and the project will roll out as a design and build form of contract.
City management have also confirmed that they will continue to have regular briefing meetings with the local councillors.
