One man charged, two released, and a total of six arrests made, the investigation into the murder of popular school teacher and publican John Kenny has continued unabated, with three people, still being questioned by gardai last evening, expected to soon be charged or released.
At time of going to press, two men - one aged 17 and the other in his thirties - and a woman, aged in her early thirties, were still being questioned by investigating gardai in relation to the murder of 56-year-old John Kenny at his pub in the village of Oughterard on September 25 last.
There have been a number of arrests made since the murder investigation was launched. The latest arrest took place late Tuesday evening resulting in a woman being taken in for questioning and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
She joined four other suspects, all male, who had been arrested Tuesday morning in planned Garda searches at various addresses throughout Galway city and county. Three suspects, a male aged 17 years and two others in their twenties and thirties, were held at Galway Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, while the fourth, a 29-year-old man was detained at Tuam Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. By yesterday, two of the four men arrested had been released without charge, and a file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
At a special sitting of Galway District Court last Sunday 37-year-old Romanian national Florin Fitzpatrick, of The Green, College Road, was charged with withholding informing in relation to the investigation. Fitzpatrick was arrested in Galway city on the evening of September 28 and detained at Galway Garda Station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. The father of two, who has worked as a security guard for many years, was refused bail and is due to be brought before Harristown District Court tomorrow.
