Galway will be music central from today when the four day Guinness Live Festival takes to the streets and venues of the city’s Latin Quarter.
There will be a host of musicians and DJs performing today, tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday and all shows are free. Among the highlights will be shows by leading Irish performers Duke Special and Jerry Fish.
Duke Special will play Kelly’s on Bridge Street tomorrow at 9pm. Hailing from Belfast, Duke Special’s critically acclaimed 2006 album Songs from The Deep Forest achieved platinum status in Ireland. It was followed in 2008 by I Never Thought This Day Would Come.
More recently the Ulsterman has expanded his artist ambitions, working with leading producer Steve Albini, to create the album The Stage, A Book, and The Silver Screen. He also toured the multi-media stage show The Silent World Of Hector Mann, featuring music, spoken word, and film.
Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club will be bringing their much loved “indie lounge lizard schmooze, mariachi swampadelica” styled act and music to The Quays on Saturday at 9.30pm.
On the night Jerry and the boys will play songs from their most recent album The Beautiful Untrue, as well as many of the old favourites. Expect an appealing mix of New Orleans jazz, Brazilian funk, and Black mambo jive.
Other shows to look out for during the weekend include Republic of Loose, Whipping Boy, Tucan and Noelie McDonnell. DJs performing at the festival include Paul McLoone who goes head to head with Today FM colleague Tony Fenton, and Beady Eye tour DJ Paul Gallagher.
The Latin Quarter stretches from Spanish Arch at Long Walk to O’Brien’s Bridge to St Nicholas’ Church and back (via Buttermilk lane ) to An Taibhdhearc on Middle Street.
