Man charged in connection with mother’s stabbing

A young man charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of his mother at her Roscommon home was brought before Galway District Court this week.

Flanked by gardai 25-year-old Paul Henry with an address at Ardsallagh, Athlone Road, Roscommon, was brought into the courthouse on Monday morning charged with assault causing harm of Anne Henry at her home at The Spinney, Abbeytown, Roscommon, on September 17.

When the case was called Garda Ian Delaney of Roscommon Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge, and caution. He told the court that Henry had been arrested on Saturday, September 17, in Abbeytown and that he was charged at 10.35pm the following night. The court further heard that in reply to the charge Henry said: “I’m pleading not guilty anyway”.

Inspector Ernie White requested that Henry be remanded in custody to appear at Harristown District Court. Defence solicitor Brid Miller said she was deferring making an application for bail and that there was no objection to her client being remanded in custody. In making an application for legal aid Ms Miller said her client is unemployed and in receipt of €186 per week in social welfare payments.

Judge Mary Fahy granted legal aid and ordered the accused to be remanded in custody by consent to appear at Harristown District Court tomorrow, September 23.

Mother of two Anne Henry was found at around 2.30pm last Saturday with multiple knife wounds following an incident at her home. She died from her injuries a short time later.
