THIS SATURDAY and Sunday will see two nights of indie, rock, metal, electronic alternative and punk at the Roisin Dubh. Twelve bands are giving it everything in aid of the Celia Griffin Famine Memorial.
The park at Grattan Beach has been named for Celia Griffin and is dedicated to all the children who lost their lives in the Great Famine. The benefit this weekend is to help create a monument to the 100 famine ships which sailed out of Galway between the years 1847 and 1850. These ships saved the lives of many thousands of people and the services of their captains and crews ought not to be forgotten. The stone monuments will bear the names of these ships. The Celia Griffin Children’s Park will be the only Famine Memorial park in the world where the children who died and the ships that saved so many will be memorialised.
Acts at the “Two Nights For Celia” include Dahithi, Elaine May, Sello and his African Ladies, Only Fumes and Corpses, Murray and Falkeneau Morning Lights Sarumba, and Darkest Era. Very special surprise guests will kick off the Sunday night benefit, they will be on stage at 9pm so be early and enjoy one of the fastest rising bands in Ireland.
There will also be free hot dogs and raffles for valuable prizes including a keg of beer. Admission is in the form of a €10 donation which covers both nights. Tickets from Zhivago and Roisin Dubh, and further enquiries can be answered by Mark Kennedy on [email protected]
