A man charged in connection with a pipe bomb incident which led to the evacuation of Galway Garda Station has been sent forward for trial for possession of a firearm.
Alan Rossborough (24 ) of 124 Castlepark, Ballybane, appeared before Judge Gerard Furlong at Galway District Court on Tuesday charged with having under his control, within the State on February 27, 2009, a firearm, a Remington Speedmaster .22 rifle in such circumstances as to give rise to a reasonable inference that it was not for a lawful purpose, contrary to Section 27a(1 ) of the Firearms Act 1964.
Rossborough was brought before the court in early May of this year and charged with the offence along with co-accused Michael O’Loughlin (31 ) with an address given as 10 Cardinal Cushing Road, Mervue, who was further charged with knowingly having in his control on the same date a pipe bomb under such circumstances as to give rise to the inference that it was not for a lawful purpose, contrary to Section 4 of the Explosive Substance Act 1883 as amended by Section 15(a ) of the Offences Against the State Act 1998. Inspector Sean Glynn told the court that the DPP had consented to trial by indictment in respect of both accused men and they were further remanded into custody.
On Tuesday Judge Furlong was informed that the book of evidence had been served on Rossborough at a previous sittting and that the accused is ready to take up bail as set by the High Court. Judge Furlong granted legal aid, with one senior and one junior counsel. He then ordered that Rossborough be sent for trial at the next sittings of Galway Circuit Criminal Court commencing October 6.
