Cillian Fahy, the Gort student who made headlines last year when he sold his Leaving Cert notes on eBay after achieving straight As in the State exam, is now offering summer maths courses for Leaving Cert students.
Mr Fahy is running weekend courses in which he will cover the entire new higher level maths syllabus. The course costs €100, but three lucky students can avail of a free place in each of the cities hosting the classes — Galway, Cork, and Dublin.
The two-day course will take place in Galway on Saturday August 13 and Sunday August 14; Cork on Saturday August 20 and Sunday August 21; and Dublin on Saturday August 27 and Sunday August 28.
“As a recent student myself, this is the sort of course which I felt would have really benefited me,” Mr Fahy said. “It’s designed to let students see the entire course in front of them and allow them to pace their study correctly.”
Mr Fahy is now running a competition for free courses in each of the three venues. Students can enter by emailing him a 500-word essay on why they like or dislike maths.
“The essay is designed to get students thinking closely about their relationship with maths so far — how it has been taught to them, how they’ve learned, what they’ve had trouble with, etc,” he explained.
“This taps into one of the key aims of the course — to encourage students to examine their relationship with maths and see how they can change it to help their study.”
The winning entries will be announced tomorrow (Friday ). Entries can be emailed to [email protected]
