Galway and the Cats renew camogie rivalry

The Galway Camogie senior squad will face Kilkenny in the last four of the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship on August 13 in a repeat of the 2009 semi-finals.

Galway have already defeated Kilkenny in the group games, but Noel Finn’s charges must do so again if they are to reach consecutive finals. Kilkenny ended their campaign with an impressive win over Cork.

Wexford, the current All-Ireland champions, will face Cork in the other semi-final. Both semi-finals have been fixed for Nowlan Park which does not make Galway’s task any easier.

Galway, having already qualified, had an easy win, 3-20 to 1-11, last weekend over Tipperary. Both sides were understrength and Galway had scores from Sandra Tannian, Veronica Curtin, Jessica Gill and Tara Rutledge to lead at half time by 0-11 to 0-7

Rutledge found the net early in the second half and, whenVeronica Curtin’s speculative delivery ended in the Tipperary net, the points were going west and left Galway top of the championship table.

Substitute Aislinn Connolly knocked over 0-4 from play in the second half to see Galway win with a 15-point winning margin.
