Galway camogie through to semi-finals

Galway have qualified for the 2011 All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship semi-finals, which are fixed for August 13, after an impressive 0-12 to 0-9 victory over Kilkenny on Saturday.

The other semi-finalists are current champions and favourites Wexford, Cork, Kilkenny, and Galway.

The Galway and Kilkenny clash at Duggan Park on Saturday was an enjoyable game and Galway had some good individual displays.

Playing with the wind in the first half and, inspired by centre-back Therese Maher, the home side led by 0-9 to 0-4 at the break.

Team captain Brenda Hanney hit two points to give them a good start and, although Kilkenny midfielder Anne Dalton hit three points in response, four successive scores towards the end of the opening period from Galway ensured Noel Finn’s team was in control.

Galway goalkeeper Susan Earner – who had pointed from a penalty in the first half – made a terrific save from an Aoife Neary penalty in the second and, with Sandra Tannian raising another white flag for Galway, they held out for an important win.

They are in action this Saturday away against Tipperary and that fixture will give management an opportunity to give some game time to some other members of the panel in advance of the All-Ireland semi-final.
