A 45-year-old Rahoon man has been charged in connection with the theft of nearly €40,000 in cash, stealing from one man five times over the course of seven months.
At Galway District Court on Monday Detective Garda Michael Moran gave evidence of arresting and charging Padraig Maloney with an address at Drum East, Rahoon, on July 15 last. Maloney is charged with the alleged theft of €5,000 in cash at a property at Aughnanure, Oughterard, on April 17, 2008, and with the theft of €2,000 on November 29, 2008, €18,000 on January 15, 2009, €5,000 on March 3, 2009, €5,000 on March 13, 2009, and €4,890 on June 26, 2009, at a house at The Orchard, Kingston, Salthill.
The court heard that after charge and caution the accused man replied: “I have 70 per cent of the amount I owe to these people, I will repay the remaining amount within two weeks”. Det Garda Moran added that Maloney had been released on station bail to appear in court this week.
Inspector Mick Coppinger told the court that a file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions who has directed that the matter be dealt with summarily in the District Court on the basis of a plea only.
Judge Aeneas McCarthy remanded Maloney on continuing bail to appear at Galway District Court again on July 27 next for mention.
