The Irish conference of medievalists celebrates its 25th anniversary with a conference from June 24 to 26 in the Moore Institute at NUI Galway. The conference reflects the current state of research in medieval studies, focusing on the history, archaeology, language, and literature of medieval Ireland and Europe.
This year’s speakers come from Ireland, USA, Scotland, England, France, Canada, Norway, Iceland, and Greece. The keynote speaker is Professor Alfred Smyth, an eminent historian of early medieval Ireland and Britain, based at the University of Canterbury. The lecture is open to the public and will take place in the Cairnes Theatre at 5pm on Friday June 24.
The conference will also feature special plenary sessions on cultural connections between Ireland and Scandinavia in the medieval period and on the influence of Columbanus, the Irish missionary active in France and northern Italy c. 590–615.
