The search for a new hurling manager to succeed Ger Loughnane is coming to a close with eight candidates having been nominated. The task now for the county board chairman Gerry Larkin, hurling board chairman Miko Ryan, and secretary John Fahey, is to start the assessment and interview process before final decisions can be made.
The latest to join the growing list of potential managers is former Offaly boss and Connacht Tribune sports editor John McIntyre. McIntyre has twice before put his hat in the ring, but this time he does so with a strong team that includes successful former Galway minor manager John Hardiman, Beagh’s John Moylan, and former county star Joe Connolly.
McIntyre’s bid is seen as a real match for Michael Bond and his assembled team of Galway legend Joe Cooney, Steve Mahon, and Michael Coleman who signalled their intentions soon after Loughnane lost his job.
Another two are both former Galway managers, Noel Lane and Mattie Murphy, while u-21 manager Vincent Mullins and hurling development officer Gerry Spellman have also been nominated.
They join former Portumna manager Jimmy Heverin, who is to run alongside Anthony Cunningham, who was also nominated independently.
Two Galway clubs have been fined by the County Board following a fight at the conclusion of the West Board junior decider. Both the An Spideal and Aran Islands clubs were fined €3,000 and €2,000 respectively after a melee involving players, officials, and fans broke out after An Spideal won.
