Two no shows were fined €2,000 each by a stern judge at Galway District Court this week for the offence of driving without insurance.
Jose Santos with an address at Stone House, Crowe Street, Galway, and Laura Melling with an address at The Old Monastry, Letterfrack, Galway, were both summoned to appear before Judge Gerard Haughton for a string of road traffic offences, however, they failed to make an appearance in court.
Santos had been summoned for driving without insurance, driving without a driving licence, having no tax and no NCT, and not having discs for both displayed. In his absence, Garda Oliver Whyte told the court that on May 26, 2008, at Carnmore gardai were called to the scene of a traffic accident where they spoke to the defendant. He added that Santos had no previous convictions.
For driving without insurance, Judge Haughton imposed a fine of €2,000 with two months to pay. Santos’ driving license was also endorsed and a two year disqualification was imposed. For each of the five other summons a fine of €300 was imposed.
Melling had been summoned to appear at Galway District Court for driving without insurance and a driving licence. She was also summoned for failing to produce a driving licence at the scene, failure to produce a driving licence within 10 days, and failure to produce insurance.
In the defendant’s absence, Garda Gabriel Gormally told the court that on November 27, 2007, the defendant was found driving her vehicle at Killarainy, Moycullen, without insurance or a driving licence.
For driving without insurance Judge Haughton fined her €2,000 with two months to pay, endorsed her particulars, and imposed a disqualification of two years. For each of the other four summons she was fined €300. Recognisance for both defendants was fixed at €300 with independent surety of €900.
