Cookery award for Headford student

Ciara Lynskey from Presentation College, Headford, Co Galway, was named runner up in the first Take Away My Way all-island Cookery Competition, organised by St. Angela’s College, Sligo, and sponsored by safefood. Ciara cooked a healthy vegetable burger with homemade potato wedges, carrot salad, home-made hoummus and was one of 32 finalists at the all-island final in St Angela’s College last month. Finalists were judged by a panel of experts and prizes included games consoles, gift vouchers and goody bags.

Almost a thousand entries from Ireland were received in the competition where young secondary school students were encouraged to display their culinary skills while also promoting the importance of healthy eating, by cooking their own healthier version of their favourite takeaway dish.

“Home economics students across the island are developing the skills to create takeaway dishes for themselves, family and friends, and this competition enables more young people to showcase their healthy cooking abilities” says Amanda McCloat, head of home economics at St Angela’s College, Sligo. “It is not difficult to create healthier alternatives to take-away foods that are tastier, cheaper, and can be made without leaving home.”

The competition was open to all post primary students in Ireland and YouthReach centres.
