Funk-soul diva Janelle Monae to play Galway

JANELLE MONAE has been called “a different kind of diva” by Vogue, “a true visionary” by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, while Andre ‘3000’ Benjamin says she has “one of the most enchanting voices of our generation”.

She was one of the undoubted hits at Electric Picnic 2010 and now she is coming back to Ireland and her visit will include a ‘Róisín Dubh presents...’ concert in The Black Box Theatre on Monday June 27 at 8pm.

Monae’s reputation has been built on two concept soul-funk releases - the Metropolis, Suite I: The Chase EP and the album The ArchAndroid - which chart the story of Cindi Mayweather, who must free the citizens of Metropolis from the Great Divide, a secret society using time travel to suppress freedom and love throughout the ages. No wonder Prince is a fan of her’s.

“Monae creates this futuristic world of hers by synthesising past inspirations: the operatic pop and hornlike sharpness of Shirley Bassey, the energetic funk of James Brown, and the breezy rock and soul of OutKast,” said Creative Loafing.

A ground-breaking, genre-blurring singer, songwriter, producer, and performer, Monae’s inventive style melds a refined pop sensibility with an extraordinary post-modern mash-up of soul, funk, and rock‘n’roll.

Monae’s career so far has encouraged her to “embrace the things that make me unique and to continue being an even bigger agent of change, especially as an artist”. Her hope is that her music will inspire people to “embrace their own superpowers and become the voice of change...in their own communities”.
