Councillor calls on Connemara residents to join rural broadband scheme

A Galway County councillor is calling on those unable to avail of a broadband service to apply for the Rural Broadband Scheme before the deadline of July 29.

Cllr Eileen Mannion said this week that there are many areas of Connemara where people are unable to obtain a broadband service and that this is a great opportunity for the households affected to apply for the scheme.

The councillor is advising people who are currently unable to received a broadband service from existing providers to apply for the scheme. Those eligible to apply include people living in a rural area, outside an area covered by the National Broadband Scheme and who are unable to obtain broadband from the internet service providers operating in your area.

The Rural Broadband Scheme was established to enable a basic broadband service to be provided to individual rural premises - homes or businesses - which are not capable of obtaining a broadband service from existing providers. The Scheme is an EU funded measure under the Rural Development Programme operated by the Department. of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources in co-operation with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Further details of the scheme can be found on www.dcenr.ie or by calling 1850 678 100
