South Connemara water schemes are set for a €15 million investement to upgrade their infrastructure. The announcement was made yesterday by Phil Hogan, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government as part of the Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010– 2012. The investment will specifically benefit the communities of An Cheathru Rua, Rosmuc, and Casla, with two new reservoirs at Rosmuc and An Cheathru Rua.
Galway West TD Sean Kyne welcomed the announcement: “This new funding, together with the funding recently announced for the Clifden Sewerage Scheme, the new reservoir for Tonabrucky and the new funding of conservation initiatives for the city water network, represent a significant investment by the new Government in Galway’s water and waste-water infrastructure.
“It also represents an acknowledgement of the problems with water supply recently experienced in the South Connemara area, in particular An Cheathru Rua and Rosmuc. The new €15 million euro investment will ensure a high quality water supply for Connemara.”
The Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, has given his approval to invite tenders for the construction of a new Water Treatment Plant, the construction of two new reservoirs at Rosmuc and Glenmore, Carroroe, and the network and pipe-laying contract for the Costelloe Regional Water Supply Scheme.
He said: “My approval reflects the commitment in the Programme for Government that our public drinking water supplies will deliver a reliable service that is 100 per cent compliant with drinking water standards. In this case, the proposed scheme will ensure that consumers in the Costelloe area will have a high quality water supply that will have capacity to meet current and future needs.”
