RITA ANN HIGGINS, one of Galway’s greatest and most outspoken poets, will read at the May Over The Edge: Open Reading in the Galway City Library, on Thursday May 26 at 6.30pm.
Rita Ann first came to national attention in 1986 with her collection Goddess on the Mervue Bus. Her most recent book Hurting God – Part Essay Part Rhyme was published last year by Salmon.
As well as poetry, Rita Ann has also written plays for stage and radio, including Face Licker Come Home, God of the Hatch Man, Down All The Roundabouts, and The Empty Frame.
Also reading is Seamus Scanlon, winner of the 2011 Fish Publishing One Page competition and the 2009 Carnegie Corporation/New York Times award for librarianship; and Angela T Carr, whose work has been shortlisted for numerous awards.
The reading is also part of a series of events to mark Japan Day in Galway, which gives Galwegians an opportunity to express solidarity with the victims of the recent earthquake in Fukushima. Yoshimi Hayakawa of The Wa Café will read a poem at the open-mic section of the reading to mark the day.
