MAGO MUSICAE, a new exhibition of contemporary artwork inspired by mediaeval music will take place next week as part of the Galway Early Music Festival.
Imago Musicae opens on Monday May 16 above The Bakehouse, Lombard Street, and will feature work by Aoife Bheilbigh, Laura Burns, Ann Vaughan, and Sorcha Ní Chróinín.
Galway Early Music asked the artists to use music from the 1400 to 1750 period as inspiration. Each artist was given music that represents a particular time and place and the artist was free to use, react to or interpret the music in any way she chose.
Aoife Bheilbigh works in the medium of paint, printmaking, photography, collage, and paper-cut; Laura Burns has exhibited her work in Galway and London; Ann Vaughan is currently based in Clare, where she is a practising artist; and Sorcha Ní Chróinín is currently an animation student in the Edinburgh College of Art.
The Galway Early Music Festival celebrates mediaeval, renaissance and baroque music. This year’s highlights include performances from I Fagiolini, winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Ensemble Award 2005; Siobhan Armstrong; and The Irish Consort.
