BOB MARLEY, a cultural icon, a prophet and hero to Jamaicans, and one of the worlds most loved musicians will be celebrated and remembered in Galway next week.
Bob Marley died on May 11 1981 and to mark the 30th anniversary of his untimely passing, Natty Wailer and the Reggae Vibes will play Monroe’s Live on Thursday May 12.
The concert will be a celebration of Marley’s life and work with Natty Wailer performing many of Marley’s best known songs as well as his own compositions.
Natty is a former member of The Wailers. He first met Marley through Wailers’ bass player Aston ‘Familyman’ Barrett in 1972, just a couple of months after graduating from high school.
That same year he began to rehearse with The Wailers as a studio session musician. Eventually toured with the band and would record on many Bob Marley albums and tour as part of Marley’s band.
Support on the night is from local reggae/dub band the Dub Doctors Sound System who are currently working on their second album which includes a collaboration with Sinead O’Connor on the Lee Perry track ‘Vampire’.
To kick off the night, Galway drum and dance troupe Suba Suba will perform a selection of West African rhythms and dances, and there will be more reggae from DJ Satta Roots.
The event is being organised by Sean Agus Nua, which promotes interculturalism in Galway through music and the arts.
