Crowe calls for restoration of The Fishery Tower

The Fishery Tower may be one of the most eye catching historic buildings in the city, but it has “fallen into a dreadful state” and its footbridge is “a safety-hazard”.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil councillor Ollie Crowe who is calling on the Fáilte Ireland to secure funding and restore the footbridge and monument.

“The Fishery Tower is an important fishery museum, which warrants recognition by various heritage and tourist groups,” he said. “However, it is embarrassing that we have belittled this monument by ignoring its maintenance.”

Cllr Crowe said the tower has “fallen into a dreadful state, and is an eyesore to the residents and visitors of Galway alike”. He also said the footbridge has become “a safety-hazard” as “a bridge of this nature is always an attraction to children”.

Cllr Crowe has spoken with Fiona Monaghan of Fáilte Ireland, and she has confirmed that FI is currently processing an application made by the Galway City Council to carry out remedial works on the bridge leading to the Fishery Tower. The matter will come before this month’s Fáilte Ireland meeting.

“As a member of Fáilte Ireland Tourism West, I will make every effort to ensure funding is obtained to restore this monument,” said Cllr Crowe.

According to Cllr Crowe, Fáilte Ireland’s latest published report indicates the tourism industry is worth €5.3 billion, and 3.8 per cent of GNP, while more than 2.5 million people visited the West, accounting for revenue of €672.6 million.

“While visitor numbers have fallen, the tourism industry has been identified as a key factor in restoring our local economy,” he said. “Through hard work and perseverance, we can grow these visitor numbers again. We must take pride in our natural resources, and ensure that we showcase our city in all its glory.”
