Conneely accuses UHG of using cancer funds to balance books

The chairperson of the HSE Regional Forum, Cllr Padraig Conneely, has called on the management of University Hospital Galway “to come clean” following allegations that €600,000 in cancer services funding had been used to balance the books.

Cllr Conneely this week accused UHG of doing the “unthinkable” by taking funding specifically ringfenced for cancer services in the west and diverting it to other areas within the hospital and to the general budget.

“To divert funding for cancer care is unacceptable and I will be demanding a full inquiry into cancer care funding to UHG,” said Cllr Conneely.

In response UHG claimed that the situation is of no consequence as a significant amount of its own budget allocation is spent on cancer services.
