Alice Mary Higgins, daughter of Labour president Michael D Higgins, has announced that despite much speculation, she is not running in the Seanad elections.
Ms Higgins was approached by two NGOs to consider running in the election to the Upper House of the Oireachtas but she declined to do so.
However there was still much speculation that she would be seeking a seat and this had led to many people sending her messages of support and asking if the campaign is going well. As a result, Ms Higgins feels it is necessary to clarify the situation.
“I have received very nice messages of support from people and I would like to thank all those who have sent messages,” she told the Galway Advertiser, “but the fact is that I turned down the offer from the NGOs to run and I will not be standing as a candidate for the Seanad.”
