Galway swimmers set new records

Six titles, a host of podium finishes, and nine new Connacht records were set by Galway Swimming Club competitors at the Leinster Long Course Championships in Dublin at the weekend.

Pick of the record swims came from Kevin McGlade, who in setting u-19 and senior records, won the Open 50 freestyle and also picked up a bronze in the open 100 freestyle.

In the open 200 butterfly, David O’Sullivan set new u-19 and senior Connacht records, winning the events and finishing second in the 100 butterfly. The last of the individual records came from Cian Duffy, who set new u-19 and senior records in the 200 backstroke, finishing third,while also taking third in the 200 individual medley.

The other records were broken in the 4X200 freestyle relays which Galway SC dominated. The men’s team of David O’Sullivan, Kevin McGlade, Jack Keogh and Cian Duffy set new Connacht u-19 and senior records, while the female team of Dairne Ryan, Saoirse McGrath, Ruth Keogh and Sharon Coady won the event over Irish short course champions ESB from Dublin and set a new Connacht senior record.

There were also Leinster titles for Dairne Ryan in the 50 freestyle and Saoirse McGrath in the 400 individual medley. McGrath also finished second in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle.

There were also third place podium finishes for Fiona Staunton in the 100 breaststroke, Sharon Coady in the 200 freestyle, and Keena Walsh in the 200 breaststroke.
