Galway in 1911 was a very different place to what it is now but we can get a good sense of what it was like through the 1911 Census figures.
The Galway Archaeological and Historical Society will hold a public lecture, entitled The Census of 1911: the Western Dimension, by Dr Catriona Crowe in the Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, on Monday at 8pm.
The lecture will look at Galway city and county in 1911, with reference to selected census returns and contemporary photographs, dealing with political, social, and economic life, sport and culture.
Dr Crowe is head of special projects at the National Archives of Ireland. She is manager of the Irish Census Online Project, which has placed the 1901 and 1911 censuses online free of charge over the last four years. She is also vice-president of the Irish Labour History Society.
All are welcome to the lecture. For more information see www.gahs.info
