Killimor produced an exhibition of incredible camogie power play on Sunday in Croke Park to blow Inniscarra out of sight in the senior All-Ireland final.
It was epic stuff and the Killimor girls picked the right day to produce such a stunning display.
Some 4,725 came through the gates at Croker to watch team captain Brenda Hanney lead her side to All-Ireland glory in dazzling style. And while the 21-point margin was a surprise, the performance was not, according to victorious manager Tommy Callagy.
“We had thought all year that there was a performance like that in them, but it was an incredible achievement to get it in Croke Park. It was a bit like a dream, but they are absolutely brilliant girls and they produced an outstanding display.”
Killimor started in whirlwind fashion and early scores from Claire Conroy, Martina Conroy (two ) and the superb Susan Keane, who had a marvellous game, settled the side into a winning groove.
More was to follow, and when Martina Conroy sent a stunning shot into the Cork net after only 16 minutes following a great run by Hanney, the omens were not good for the Munster champions. Lorraine Donnelly also goaled and they led by 2-4 to 0-1 at half-time.
When Conroy notched a few frees and Eimear Haverty also got in on the act early in the second half, they were never going to be caught and the game was over as a contest.
It was the first time in 40 years the All-Ireland camogie finals were played in Croke Park and it was fitting its return to the hallowed ground was marked by such a magnificent display.
The fact that that display was by a Galway side and one winning their first All-Ireland title only made the occasion all the sweeter.
